At this stage, the lumber still contains a significant amount of moisture. Kiln drying reduces the moisture content to a controlled level, improving dimensional stability and reducing the risk of shrinkage and warping after installation.

For overseas shipments, kiln drying also reduces shipping weight and helps minimize the risk of mould and decay during long-distance transportation, particularly in enclosed shipping containers.
